In late September of 2001, 13 miners were trapped in a West Virgina collapse. It was on the news for about 3 days and actually miss-reported (saying one dead / 12 survived). But at the end of the day, one sole minor survived the accident and 12 of his friends, coworkers, companions and family were dead.
The headlines read “Record-Breaking Mine Disaster In West Virginia!”
It was an obscure blip on history, but for some reason it inspired me to do a quick illustration.
